Read MoreReview: Clayface – “Horrifying, funny and engrossing.”
Coming out in time for Halloween, Clayface is a body horror film exploring themes of vanity, revenge and love, but in its brief runtime, its exploration of these themes remains (ironically) superficial. Starring Tom Harries as Matt Hagen, a brilliant actor and rising star in Hollywood whose aspirations of staying in the limelight are cut short when he falls victim to the mob and is viciously disfigured....

Read MoreLondon Film Festival 2026 Review: 7 Miles Out – “A triumph of indie cinema.”
Writer and director Carol Morley is no stranger to mining her past in her work, having previously made the documentary The Alcohol Years. Her latest film, 7 Miles Out is a coming-of-age autofiction drama, adapted from her 2017 novel of the same name. Set in Stockport, crucially seven miles out from Manchester, away from the exciting post-punk scene of the late 70s and early 80s – it’s a highly personal...

Read MoreLondon Film Festival 2026 Review: Flies – “A warm, naturalistic and poignant film.”
Mexican filmmaker Fernando Eimbcke’s black-and-white comedy-drama Flies is a gentle study in compassion and the effect people can have on our lives, however briefly. Co-written with screenwriter Vanessa Garnica, the plot is simple and light on exposition. It’s all about the characters and the situations they find themselves in. The opening could be a comedy short in itself. Olga, an older, solitary woman...

Read MoreLondon Film Festival 2026 Review: Misty Green – “A remarkable performance.”
Life in LA is a frenetic mix of broken dreams, systemic racism and a growing mental health crisis in comedian Chris Rock’s uneven latest comedy drama, Misty Green. He has a lot to say about all of it, and these are points worth shouting about. But where he’s razor-sharp in his stand-up routines – there are too many subjects on display for any to really land. It’s part Hollywood satire with a focus on the...

Read MoreWin tickets to see Dead Souls, the new film from Alex Cox
Powerhouse Films is bringing Dead Souls, the latest film from cult filmmaker Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid and Nancy), to the big screen! In 1890 – the year of the US census – chaos erupts when a mysterious drifter named Strindler (Cox) arrives in a town in Arizona and offers money to anyone who can provide the names of dead Mexican labourers. But, between the town drunk, hot-headed cowhands, and local outlaws,...

Read MoreBook Review – The Book Was Better: the Triumphs and Travesties of Book to Film Adaptation
“The Book Was Better: the Triumphs and Travesties of Book to Film Adaptation” by Louise Willder, One World Publications Now here’s a rather tasty little treat for those of us who adore both film and books, a little meditation on something that, let’s be honest, every reader who like cinema has thought at some point, especially when it involves an adaptation of a personal favourite...

Read MoreReview: Forgotten Island – “This is a visual film. It is loud and complex and kinetic.”
Okay, so the headline is: Forgotten Island successfully papers over a multitude of cracks by throwing enough colour and movement at its intended audience to distract from the flaws. It did manage to make me tear up, so I must have liked it, but in a “hey, this actress (turns out to be Liza Soberano) is really selling this” way, rather than the guaranteed weeping of Pixar or The Wild Robot. Quick rant, I...

Read MoreDigger – Let’s Get Nuts!
It has taken much longer to write this review than I intended because of writers’ fatigue. The incessant and exhausting discourse around cinema that has escalated in 2026 has worn me down. So instead of a review, I tried to work out what led to all this noise. Plenty of the discourse started out as positive; celebrating movies achieving great success without what were once considered the two...
