In the Shadows – New poster revealed for the new boxing drama based on the remarkable true story of Ramla Ali
The official poster has been launched for IN THE SHADOWS, the latest film by double Emmy and triple BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated director Anthony Wonke, which is out in UK cinemas 30th October 2026.
IN THE SHADOWS is based on the truly inspirational story of Ramla Ali, a Somali refugee who, without her family’s knowledge, became the first Somali British boxing champion. Not solely a boxing movie, IN THE SHADOWS is a story of determination, passion, self-discovery and self-belief. It is a coming-of-age film that champions universal themes of identity, belonging, family, love and faith: a deeply human journey where a young woman learns how to open the door to her future and find acceptance from her family and community.
Presented by Civic Studios and Affine Films, the motion picture is directed by double Emmy and triple BAFTA-winning director, Anthony Wonke, written by Ursula Rani Sarma (The Split-Up, Bodkin), and inspired by the true story of Ramla Ali, who serves as an Executive Producer, alongside her husband, Richard Moore. Wonke is known for his original feature documentaries Children on the Frontline, Fire in the Night and The Battle for Marjah, as well as his BBC documentary series The Tower: A Tale of Two Cities. His latest theatrical feature documentaries are the award winning The Accidental Spy, Dettori with Sky, The Director and the Jedi with Lucasfilm and Disney, Ronaldo with Universal Pictures, Being AP with BBC Film, and Unmasking Jihadi John: Anatomy of a Terrorist with HBO which was nominated for Emmy, BAFTA and Grierson awards.
BAFTA-winning, Jasmine Jobson (Jaq, Bird, Top Boy) plays the lead role of Ramla Ali, with Finn Cole (Sirius, Last Breath, Peaky Blinders) supporting as her husband, Richard Moore, and Gershwyn Eustache Jnr (The Man in My Basement, The Gentlemen, Andor) as Clinton, Ramla’s coach. Other key Somali cast playing Ali’s family include Hodan Yusuf, newcomer Suhayla Ahmed, Roda Asha Aden, Mustafa Aden, Moe Hashim, and Samater Ahmed.
Ramla Ali went on to make history as the first non-track and field athlete to compete for Somalia in the Olympic Games, and strived to find her own identity in spite of the world she was born into.
Against the odds, she discovers the power of family, love, faith and self-belief as she opens the door to her future.
BAFTA-winner and Oscar-nominated producer Lee Magiday (The Favourite, The Lobster) of Sleeper Films, and Madeleine Sanderson (Mouth Full of Golds) of Affine Films have produced the film.
The film was financed and executive produced by Richard Fearn and Jane Reid Fearn at Affine Films, Anushka Shah for Civic Studios, Zygi Kamasa, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, and Mike Runagall for Altitude, Teji and Natasha Mudhar for The World We Want Studios, Anne Sheehan, Ramla Ali, Richard Moore, Rory Gilmartin, and Wilf Varvill.
