Effi o Blaenau – Watch the trailer for the new Welsh-language film

MetFilm Distribution has announced that the Welsh-language feature Effi o Blaenau will be released in UK cinemas on 19 June 2026, following its World Premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival on 3 March 2026.

The film follows Effi, a young woman desperate to escape a town where the pubs are closed, the jobs have vanished, and her grandmother works night shifts in the local chip shop just to get by. A chance encounter in a Llandudno nightclub with injured soldier Lee briefly opens a door to something better. For a moment, Effi glimpses a life she never imagined — but the reality that follows is far tougher.

As she faces the future as a single, unemployed mother-to-be, Effi’s story exposes a stark social crisis: a system with too few maternity wards, too few midwives, and too many impossible choices made out of necessity rather than care.

Directed by Marc Evans (Mr Burton), the film follows Effi, a young woman who learns firsthand the personal costs of our societal shortcomings, with a tour-de-force lead performance by up-and-coming actor Leisa Gwenllian. It also features Tom Rhys Harries (Netflix’s White Lines, Apple TV’s Suspicion) ahead of his lead role in DC’s Studios new film Clayface. Adapted from Gary Owen’s much-lauded monodrama Iphigenia in Splott – a modern theatrical classic staged extensively across Wales, England and internationally – the film marks Marc Evans’ cinematic interpretation of the story, re-imagined for the screen.
