Tech Review: Mobile Pixels DUEX Plus Monitor

When I am working on articles and things for Live for Films, I often use my PC which has two monitors on the desk. I have found the extra screen real estate an absolute boon when it comes to work. I can be working on one screen and have reference material or a movie showing on the other.

Once you have that option it is difficult to go back to one screen. That means, when I am working away from the office whether it be in the living room, kitchen, coffee shop, film festival or elsewhere, I am on my single screen laptop and cursing at the lack of screen space.

Therefore, when Mobile Pixels got in touch asking if I would like to try out their DUEX Plus monitor, I jumped at the chance. Basically it attaches to the back of your laptop screen (those that are between 13 to 14 inches) and you then slide out the monitor and now you have two screens. How does that grab you? Plus you can have it freestanding if you wish.

It has a 60Hz 1080p IPS display that measures 13.3″, with a viewing area of 11.7” by 6.5” as viewable space. It is nice an slim being 6.45mm at its thinnest point and where the monitor attaches to the sliding mechanism it is just under 15mm. It has two USB-C ports. The USB-C cable has an adapter that plugs into a standard USB socket. The unit weighs 1.3lbs (something to keep in mind if travelling with it) and is compatible with Mac and windows, Nintendo Switch and Android phone.

The DEUX Plus is extremely easy to set up. You attach the monitor to the back of your laptop, plug in the USB lead, check the settings on your laptop for the new monitor, and away you go. All in, it took me about ten minutes from opening the box to having it working on my laptop.

I was quite impressed with the monitor. It can also be used in portrait mode if set up separately from the laptop.  It immediately opened up that screen real estate and it has auto-rotation so you can have it on either side of the laptop screen. When indoors it is nice and bright. However, it is not so good outside in bright sunlight. I will mainly be using it indoors this is not really an issue, just something you may want to be aware of.

The build quality was pretty decent, but I must admit that the plastic casing felt a little off. It just didn’t have that tactile or visual “wow” factor when straight out of the box. However, when it was attached to the laptop and the screen was in operation it did look and feel fantastic.

After using it for a few minutes, it soon became second nature to use and I spent some time moving around the house to work in different areas simply because I could! It is definitely great to have as an aid to work and I must admit to being rather impressed by it.

Sadly, my old laptop is not up for games and I do not have a Nintendo Switch so I cannot say how well it works with a video game. That’s just not something I do on my laptop, so it would not be a factor for in deciding whether I would have bought the DEUX Plus. It is going for $259.99 on the Mobile Pixels site.

For the ease of set-up and versatility of the display, I can heartily recommend the DEUX Plus. Such an easy, simple way to get an extra screen for your laptop. Plus as they are connected to each other it is quick and easy to set up or put away.
