The Lord of the Rings: Gollum – Watch the teaser for the new video game

Get a sneak peek at the upcoming story-driven action-adventure video game from Daedalic Entertainment based on the world of J. R. R. Tolkien.

The story revolves around Gollum’s attempt to escape Barad Dur, where he has been since he was captured by Sauron. The game features a branching narrative, and expand on the hints given by J.R.R. Tolkien about the Stoor-formerly-known-as-Sméagol to create a brand new Lord of the Rings story that aims to fit alongside the books.

Daedalic Entertainment CEO Cartsen Fichtelman had this to say about the game.

When you play Gollum, you’ll play Sméagol at the same time. You need to make some decisions, maybe some decisions that are more or less from Sméagol, and some that are from Gollum. You can decide for yourself what you’d like to see more. When you decide some things, it could be—this is reflected in the mechanics. The game forces you to convince yourself and find one of these two positions. When it comes to other iconic characters in the universe, in Middle-earth, we’ll see what happens around Gollum.

Don’t expect Gollum to look exactly like the Andy Serkis version from the movies as Art director Mathias Fischer explained.

Tolkien didn’t give a size reference for Gollum to begin with. So in the first illustrations, he’s gigantic! He’s like a monster emerging from the swamp.

The Lord of the Rings™: Gollum™ will be available in 2022 on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
