Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis join the Dungeons and Dragons movie

Hugh Grant (The Gentleman) and Sophia Lillis (It) have joined the cast of Paramount and eOne’s untitled Dungeons & Dragons adaptation, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap. They also mention Grant will be the villain of the film, but gave no further details.

They will be joining Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez (Fast and Furious films), Regé-Jean Page (Brudgerton) and Justice Smith (Pokemon Detective Pikachu). Hasbro/eOne and Paramount are jointly producing and financing the feature, with eOne distributing in the UK and Canada and Paramount in the rest of world.

Johnathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will direct and write the script based on a draft by Michael Gilio. Jeremy Latcham is producing through his deal with studio eOne, Hasbro’s entertainment arm. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner is also producing.

Dungeons & Dragons is a leading fantasy entertainment franchise, fueled by the imagination of storytellers around the world. More than 40 million fans have interacted with or played D&D since it was first published 46 years ago, including via video games and livestream entertainment on Twitch and YouTube.

Plot details are vague, but last year there was mention it would follow a “group of adventurers looking for the Eye of Vecna, a powerful artifact that dates back to the earliest days of the game. Vecna is a powerful lich turned god whose hand and eye (remnants from when Vecna was a mortal) grant unspeakable power. Both the Hand and Eye of Vecna come with a terrible cost – in order to use either artifact, the user must remove their existing eye or hand and then replace it with the artifact.”

Previous reports have also said the adventurers would be led by Raven Hightower, a warrior with a magic flamesword, who is haunted by his sister’s death. Other characters include the “half-dragon” Hack Karroway, the gnome thief Olivan Trickfoot, and a masked warrior named Alyssa Steelsong. The main villain of the movie is a male drow named Razer Horlbar who once kept Raven and his sister as slaves, along with a female tiefling named Damala and a brutish warrior known only as “The Beast.

I have no idea if any of this will actually be in the movie, but it all sounds pretty decent and in keeping with the game. I play a lot of Dungeons and Dragons and have suffered through some of the earlier films based on the game. I really hope they get this film right or, at the very least, half-decent.
