The Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind kabuki stage play is heading to Blu-ray

Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was a manga and then an anime feature film. It was also a kabuki stage play that was performed at Shinbashi Enbujo from December 6th to December 25th, 2019.

While the film only covered a small section of the manga, the kabuki play covered the whole story and was six-hours long!

A huge industrial civilization was destroyed by a war called the Seven Days of Fire, and most of the land was covered with toxic, miasmatic fungal forests and rotten seas, inhabited by giant bugs. Even so, the battle between humans has not stopped, and the two major powers of the Kingdom of Tormekia and the Union Empire of the Lords of the Earth Demon (Doruk) are in conflict. The “Valley of the Wind” is a small remote country where the people who manipulate the wind live, and has an old covenant with Tormekia. Nausicaa, the daughter of the chieftain, wants to be familiar with the rotten sea that people fear, love bugs, communicate with her, and unravel the mystery of the rotten sea. At one point, like the Valley of the Wind, in the small country Pesite, which has a pact, the weapon “God Warriors” that burned down the world in 7 days of fire is restored …

Luckily for us, there is a multi-disc set being released as part of the Ghibli ga Ippai (“Full of Ghibli”) Collection, Studio Ghibli’s home video brand banner. Two formats are being offered: a two-disc Blu-ray set, and a four-disc DVD version. The Blu-ray set is priced at 12,000 yen (US$114) and the DVD set is 9,600 yen and they are available for pre-order here.
