7 Stoner Movies You Have to Watch This Year

Marijuana and other cannabis products have become a big part of 2020 culture. Marijuana and other cannabis products are available in medical dispensaries in 33 states across the United States, and this number is only counting.

You can also buy CBD oil online in pretty much any state as long as it abides by certain guidelines. The best CBD oil contains high quality products, but won’t get you high, which has made it a very popular product among those seeking medicinal benefits while at work.

Because of this huge cultural movement, the movie industry has created a full genre to celebrate it called “stoner movies.” Basically, this includes any collection of movies that involve weed, CBD, or other cannabis products. Oftentimes, they’re about the hilarious happenings of those who get high, but other times, the films show a more serious side to them, indicating the usefulness of some of the products.

If you’re even slightly intrigued by this fascinating genre, you’ll want to check out some popular stoner movies that feature only the best actors, directing, and mishaps

Ted

If you haven’t seen Ted yet, now is the time to pop it into your Blu-ray player. (Or stream it online, since this is 2020!) The film came out in 2012, but it continues to appeal to audiences into the stoner film genre.

Ted stars Seth MacFarlane (the voice of Ted), a popular actor, director, and the creator of Family Guy, American Dad, and more. Ted is about a man (Mark Wahlberg) who somehow fulfills his childhood dream of having his teddy bear, Ted, that somehow comes to life. Surprisingly, it’s not a children’s film, and it’s certainly not meant for younger audiences.

Ted is one of few stoner movies that was made on a high budget with good box office performance. The writing is hilarious as we watch Mark Wahlberg’s character John battle between reality with his girlfriend and a stoner fantasy with his favorite teddy bear.

Super High Me

Remember Supersize Me, the low budget documentary that detailed the effects of eating McDonalds for every meal for 30 days? Super High Me is made by the same people, but instead of looking at the secrets of the fast food industry, it shows the secrets of cannabis.

Doug Benson stars in this experiment. Before beginning, he avoids all forms of cannabis for 30 days. Then, he spends the next 30 days smoking whatever form of weed he wants to and making comparisons between the two experiences.

As you can imagine, this documentary is both relaxing and informative—not to mention hilarious since you’re following the antics of a real-life “stoner.” It’s very popular among stoners who can relate to the journey and want to learn more about their favorite products.

Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny

Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny is predicted to be the most popular stoner film on Netflix. It stars Jack Black who goes by the fitting name of JB. He’s an aspiring Rockstar trying to make it big in Hollywood after growing up in a small town. When he arrives in the big city, he meets Kyle Gass, who also fittingly goes by the name KG. KG is a big-time rocker who is experienced in the ways of Hollywood and decides to mentor JB and teach him how to “rock” in LA.

When learning the ways of rock stars in the big city, it’s no surprise that they end up with weed in hand, experimenting as they pick a guitar together. Their adventures are both heartwarming and funny!

Dude, Where’s My Car?

When Dude, Where’s My Car? came out in the year 2000 starring Aston Kutcher, Seann William Scott, and Jennifer Garner, it didn’t receive the highest of praise. However, a recent cult following of stoner films has made it a popular one on the list, and if it’s been a while since you’ve seen it, there’s no better time to turn it on.

Kutcher and William-Scott spend a crazy night together drinking and doing drugs, leading them on a wild path of crazy antics. As indicated, it involves someone forgetting where they parked their car underneath a drunken, high stupor plus the hilarious antics that follow.

This Is the End

This Is the End is an apocalypse, end-of-the-world movie that stars all sorts of celebrities playing not characters, but themselves. Of course, they’re each playing a character of some sort rather than themselves, and this comedy brings out the best in each.

A group of celebrities are having a party at James Franco’s house when a series of events causes the earth to literally crumble and burn. Seth Rogan, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson are stuck in Franco’s mansion trying to survive the end of the world.

Of course, if you were living the end of the world, you’d partake in some fine cannabis products as well. The whole show is hilarious with a twist ending!

That 70’s Show

It’s true, this one isn’t a movie, but we all need a great show to binge watch, and That 70’s Show is the perfect series for you. Not every episode contains marijuana use or references to it, but there are enough throughout the eight seasons that you can certainly put it in the stoner genre of filmography.

It stars many of our now favorite actors including Mila Kunis, Aston Kutcher, Dany Masterson, Laura Prepon, and Wilmer Valderrama and is, obviously, set in the 70s. Like any good 70’s series, there are plenty of people getting high—including Tommy Chong who occasionally shows up to cement it as stoner filmography.

The Culture High

Here’s another great documentary, but unlike Superhigh Me, it’s not a low budget film. The Culture High is highly rated as one of the best films documenting the excitement surrounding cannabis; best of all, you can find it on Netflix.

This captivating film not only discusses the popularity behind weed, but also some of the political forces that are both trying to prevent, and somehow propelling, the use of marijuana. You’ll recognize some of the big names contributing like Snoop Dogg, Richard Branson, and Howard Marks.

This list should set you up for a couple of months of watching some of the best stoner films out there. But don’t worry—there are plenty more to add to your list for next time!
