Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is becoming a kabuki play

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a 1984 animated film adapted and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, based on his 1982 manga of the same name.

Taking place in a future post-apocalyptic world, the film tells the story of Nausicaä, the young princess of the Valley of the Wind. She becomes embroiled in a struggle with Tolmekia, a kingdom that tries to use an ancient weapon to eradicate a jungle of mutant giant insects.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was released in Japan a year before Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli with late director Isao Takahata.

Entertainment company Shochiku has announced that the film will be made into a kabuki play. The first kabuki play to be adapted from a work by Miyazaki.

The play will be performed at the Shinbashi Enbujo theatre in Tokyo in December next year. Kabuki actor Onoe Kikunosuke, who proposed doing the remake, will play Nausicaa, while Nakamura Shichinosuke will play Princess Kushana.

Other actors taking part include Onoe Matsuya, Bando Minosuke and Onoe Ukon.
