Sweet Vecna! The Dungeons & Dragons movie is slowly moving ahead

At the start of the year Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) was in negotiations to direct Dungeons & Dragons for Paramount Pictures. Michael Gillio  was working onthe script. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis were producing.

The film will be one of the first projects to go into production for the newly created AllSpark Pictures. Launched last October, the production company aims to transform itself into an industry player to rival Marvel Studios.

Nothing more was heard about it, but now Production Weekly’s listings mention that Dungeons & Dragons will begin principal photography in the summer of 2019.

There is now word on whether Mckay has signed a deal with the studio.

Joe Manganiello (True Blood), who is a big D&D player, had also talked about what the film needs, but there is no word on whether he is involved.

I am a huge fan of the game and have always been disappointed with previous attempts to make films based on it. It is still very early days, but I do hope they involve people, like Joe and Matthew Mercer, who actually play the game otherwise I fear we will get something that is fantasy based but misses out on what makes the game great. The recent Waterdeep: Dragon Heist campaign could work as a film. I also really hope they do something more original than having a bunch of kids on Earth playing the game and then getting sucked into it.

Could I ask for a live-action film based on the Critical Role adventures?

With D&D more popular than ever there is certainly a big fanbase out there for a film.

What would you like to see in a D&D film?

If you are looking to get into the game then I can higly recommend the Starter Set, which I wrote about here. You can buy that here.
