Gods and Monsters – James Gunn discusses the new DC films and TV shows heading our way

We have finally had an update from James Gunn with regards the future of the DCU from DC Studios. He shared the news in the video below and I have put together a rundown of what we can expect.

He mentioned that there will be a DCU proper which will feature stories linked together on film and TV. Characters from animated shows will appear in live action shows and vice versa with characters played and voiced by the same actors.

Projects such as Joker and Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which are outside the main DCU will be clearly labelled as DC Elseworlds. That’s something I have thought was needed for a long time.

Films currently completed will be released as planned. First up there is Shazam! Fury of the Gods followed by The Flash movie. The latter will reset the DCU and lead into Blue Beetle and Aquaman 2.

Then we get into the new projects which are under the banner of Gods and Monsters. Gunn stressed that this is just the beginning.

  • Creature Commandos – A new animated series.
  • Waller – A TV show – Viola Davis will return to play Amanda Waller and join up with some members of Team Peacemaker.
  • Superman: Legacy – James Gunn is in the middle of writing this and it is due out on 11th July 2025.
  • Lanterns – A TV show following John Stewart and Hal Jordan on Earth in what is “almost like a True Detective story” involving two space cops who uncover a big mystery that underpins this phase.
  • The Authority – A film focussing on a group of powered individuals who feel the world is broken and they want to fix it.
  • Paradise Lost – A Wonder Woman prequel live-action TV show set on Paradise Island.
  • The Brave and The Bold – This will introduce the DCU version of Batman along with his son Damian Wayne.
  • Booster Gold – A TV show following a man from the future who heads to the present to try and be a hero.
  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – A film based on the recent run by Tom King.
  • Swamp Thing – A dive into horror in a new film.

I am just happy there is some plan in place now. Out of the projects announced, I think The Authority, Lanterns, and Swamp Thing are the ones I am most excited about.

How do you feel about the announcement? What projects are you most looking forward to seeing?
