Renfield – The Nicolas Cage as Dracula movie gets a plot synopsis

Universal Pictures’ Renfield stars Nicholas Hoult as the titular disciple of Dracula, who first appeared in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. The film is based on an original story outline from Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible).

Hoult is joined by Awkwafina and Ben Schwartz. Nicolas Cage has been cast as Dracula and recently talked about the role and the inspirations for his performance.

Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War, The Lego Batman Movie) is directing the film, which is described as a modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone. Deadline had the news that Adrian Martinez (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Focus) has also joined the project.

They also had the following description of the film.

The film centers on Renfield (Hoult), who has grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s (Cage) lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on life and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina).

To be honest, that sounds pretty lousy to me, but hopefully, future descriptions will flesh it out more. I am still on board just to see Cage’s Dracula.

What are your thoughts on the film so far?

Ryan Ridley (Fox’s Ghosted, Cartoon Network’s Rick & Morty) wrote the script. McKay is producing the film with Skybound Entertainment’s film team, including Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst, with his producing partner Samantha Nisenboim exec producing.
