The Mummy has the biggest ever international opening for a Tom Cruise movie

Despite all the doom, gloom and terrible reviews, it seems that Universal’s Dark Universe is actually off to a pretty good start. Turns out that despite it performing poorly in the USA it has been doing rather well around the world. It was actually the #1 movie worldwide over the weekend.

I am quite glad of that as I found it all rather enjoyable. It is a bit of B movie popcorn fun. Adam also enjoyed it and you can read our reviews here and here.

It had an estimated production budget of $125 million and so far, according to Box Office Mojo, has made $175,046,120 globally.

With an estimated $57 million, Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ release of Wonder Woman finished atop the US weekend box office for a second week in a row. The Mummy was in second place with $32,246,120.

However, due to the overseas opening, it became Cruise’s largest worldwide opening ever, beating the $102.5 million international opening for War of the Worlds. It debuted in 63 international markets, including China where it brought in an estimated $52.2 million. Other openings include record openings for a Cruise-led feature in South Korea ($17.8m), Russia ($7.6m), Mexico ($5.1m) and Brazil ($3.6m). It opens in France next weekend, followed by a release in Japan on July 28.

Next up for Universal’s Dark Universe is The Bride of Frankenstein with Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast) set to direct for a February 15, 2019. There is no word on who will be playing the Bride but Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lawrence have been rumoured.

I am quite looking forward to seeing what Condon does with that film has he directed 1998’s Gods and Monsters that explored the last days of Frankenstein (1931) director James Whale. It starred Sir Ian McKellen and Brendan Fraser.

  1. Thoroughly enjoyed the Mummy, nice balance of humour and action. Nice to see Tom play a more vulnerable and flawed character. I’m looking forward to see how the universe pans out!

    • Definitely. An enjoyable summer popcorn movie.

      • Near perfect in my eyes! Just needed a bit of Billy Zane!

        • Everything is better with a bit of Zane!
