Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon is heading to 4K UHD for the first time in the UK

One of the most beautiful movies of all time makes its long-awaited high-definition debut: Barry Lyndon, the classic 1975 period drama from director Stanley Kubrick and starring Ryan O’Neal and Marisa Berenson, will be released for the first time on 4K UHD and Limited Edition 4K UHD SteelBook on November 17. It joins the ranks of Warner Bros.’ growing UK Stanley Kubrick 4K catalogue, including the likes of 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket.

How does an Irish lad without prospects become part of 18th-century English nobility? For Barry Lyndon (Ryan O’Neal) the answer is: any way he can! His climb to wealth and privilege is the enthralling focus of this sumptuous Stanley Kubrick version of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel.

For this ravishing, slyly satiric winner of 4 Academy Awards®, Kubrick found inspiration in the works of the era’s painters. Costumes and sets were crafted in the era’s designs and pioneering lenses were developed to shoot interiors and exteriors in natural light. The result is a cutting-edge movie, sumptuously scored and beautifully acted, bringing a historical period to vivid screen life like no other film before or since. The film looks absolutely stunning in the new 4K restoration.

The critically acclaimed big-screen adaptation of William Thackeray Makepeace’s classic novel won Academy Awards® for Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design and Music; it also won two BAFTAs. Little White Lies says it might be ‘Kubrick’s best film’.

Written and directed by Stanley Kubrick (Full Metal Jacket), the film stars Ryan O’Neal (Love Story) as the title character, and Marisa Berenson (Cabaret), along with Patrick Magee (A Clockwork Orange) and Leonard Rossiter (Rising Damp). The film was produced by Kubrick, Jan Harlan and Bernard Williams.

The 4K UHD SteelBook and 4K UHD contain the original theatrical trailer.
