Are We Good – Utopia picks up the Marc Maron documentary

Utopia announced today that they have acquired North American theatrical rights for Steven Feinartz’s feature-length documentary Are We Good? produced by Anchor Entertainment. The film, which premiered at SXSW Festival in March and screened at Tribeca Festival in June to critical acclaim, is a behind-the-curtain look at comedian, actor, and podcast pioneer Marc Maron that follows the sudden loss of his partner and filmmaker Lynn Shelton.

Utopia will release the film in theatres in October, coinciding with the end of Maron’s enormously popular podcast WTF. 16 years in, WTF is one of the most-streamed and longest-running podcasts of all time.

Are We Good? features exclusive interviews with comics including John Mulaney, Nate Bargatze, David Cross and Michaela Watkins as well as podcast footage from his interviews with President Barack Obama, Andrew Garfield, Patton Oswalt and many more.

The documentary follows the life of comic and podcast pioneer Marc Maron. Loss and growth take center stage as he struggles to evolve in the wake of deep tragedy. The passing of his partner and filmmaker Lynn Shelton weighs on Maron, as the film picks up a year later. We follow him on a self-reflective journey as he builds an hour of comedy, while processing grief both on-stage and off. It chronicles his career from the 1980’s with Sam Kinison through many career obstacles that eventually led him to the legacy-defining podcast; WTF with Marc Maron. Looking back over his life at 60, Maron reconciles with a declining father, a changing comedy landscape and the prospect of retirement.

The film is directed by Steven Feinartz and produced by Steven Feinartz, Julie Seabaugh and Ethan Goldman. Executive produced by Rob Guillermo, Ray Maiello, Dan Fried, Jason Murphy, Dan Baglio, Damion Greiman, Ryan Bitzer, Tim Rummel, Toby Nalbandian, Gregory Schmidt, Emilio Schenker, Michael Schmidt, Gideon Tadmor, Ariel Weisbrod, Sean Bradley, Marcus Lustig and Louis Krubich.

Production companies Truant Pictures, global studio Sipur Studios, Indus Valley Media, Radiant Media Studios, 800 Pound Gorilla Media are executive producing Are We Good? along with Anchor Entertainment and Feinartz Department.

John Sloss with Cinetic Media handled domestic sales and Raymond Legal is handling legal.

Steven Feinartz is a Director and Producer behind more than 20 acclaimed specials and series for Netflix, Comedy Central, Showtime, and HBO; including the series Bill Burr Presents: The Ringers. He co-created and directed Please Understand Me, a scripted comedy series with Sarah Silverman for Facebook Watch. He made his directorial debut with The Bitter Buddha, a cult-hit documentary on comic Eddie Pepitone that received a theatrical release. Feinartz most recently directed the HBO stand-up specials Marc Maron: From Bleak to Dark (2023) and Marc Maron: Panicked (2025). In 2025, he launched his own banner, Feinartz Department, a production company dedicated to documentaries, comedy specials, and scripted projects. He is represented by Adam Triplett at 3 Arts Entertainment.

“Marc let me into his life at a time when most people would’ve shut the door,” said Director Steven Feinartz in a statement. “What we captured isn’t just about grief but about what happens after, when you’re still standing, and still making jokes because that’s all you know how to do. I’m incredibly grateful to Julie Seabaugh who was there from the beginning, and Ethan Goldman at Anchor Entertainment for helping push it over the line. We couldn’t have a better partner than Utopia. They champion films that don’t fit neatly into a category, like this one.”

“Steven’s film, “Are We Good?,” is more than a documentary – it is a love letter, an emotional rollercoaster and an experience that is best seen in theaters,” said Utopia Co-Founder Cole Harper. “For everything Marc Maron has created and leads in his life, from his standup performances and podcasts to his on-screen roles and public persona, this story is as raw and authentic as any you will ever see. It’s amazing to come full circle on this film, having known Steven for a long time, talking about film and what it takes to make something great, to now being able to support him and his best film yet, as Steven’s career in the industry continues to take form and Marc prepares for life after WTF. We believe there is a wide audience that will connect with Are We Good and we’re excited to see the reaction as we expand the film’s reach beyond its revered premieres at SXSW and Tribeca.”

“I’ve been following Marc Maron’s career for over twenty years, so when presented with the opportunity to join Steven and Julie in bringing Maron’s singular journey to the screen, the team at Anchor and I jumped at it,” said Anchor Entertainment Founder Ethan Goldman. “Maron’s story is one of courage and resilience – as he works through grief by doing what he does best – performing stand-up comedy. It’s been amazing to see this film resonate with audiences at SXSW and Tribeca, and we’re excited to now bring Are We Good?t o theatres around the country.”
