Elizabeth Banks will direct and star in Universal’s Invisible Woman

Universal are bringing us the Leigh Whannell directed The Invisible Man in a February 2020 and Dexter Fletcher is directing Renfield about Dracula’s henchman. Plans are also moving ahead with Invisible Woman.

Elizabeth Banks (Charlie’s Angels) is set to direct and star in the film, which is based on her own original pitch.

Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) wrote the script with Banks and Max Handelman producing for their Brownstone Productions.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but sources say Banks’ pitch is very different from The Invisible Man film (check out the trailer below) coming out in February that stars Elisabeth Moss. That one features Moss being hunted and terrified by a psychotic ex-boyfriend. I imagine Banks’ Invisible Woman will feature the titular character being more of a hero figure. There is no crossover potential on either film according to Variety.

Universal has decided not to go ahead with the Dark Universe, the shared cinematic universe that was meant to begin with Tom Cruise’s The Mummy (it also failed to begin with 2014’s Dracula Untold). Instead, they are focussing on filmmaker-driven projects based on the monsters’ legacies.
