"No matter where you go, there you are."

Jeremy Irons is playing an older Ozymandias in the Watchmen TV show

HBO has given a series order for Damon Lindelof’s (Lost, The Leftovers) Watchmen TV show based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic Watchmen graphic novel. Lindelof has said it will be a remix of the original comic!

Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, WATCHMEN embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.

Little is known of the main plot, or which characters from the original may show up. However, it looks like Adrian Veidt, aka Ozymandias, will be returning. In the 2009 film he was played by Matthew Goode. For the TV show Jeremy Irons will be taking over the role of the “smartest man alive.” There is no word on how big a role Ozymandias will have in the events of the show, but Irons is an excellent choice to play the older version of the character. We knew Irons was involved in the show a while back, but until now his role was described as an “aging and imperious lord of a British manor.”

/Film also report that Jean Smart (Legion) has joined the show as a mysterious FBI agent called Agent Blake. Is she somehow linked to Edward Blake, aka The Comedian, or could she be an older version of Laurie Juspeczyk, aka Silk Spectre?

This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built…but in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original. It has to vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates. It must ask new questions and explore the world through a fresh lens. Most importantly, it must be contemporary. The Old Testament was specific to the Eighties of Reagan and Thatcher and Gorbachev. Ours needs to resonate with the frequency of Trump and May and Putin and the horse that he rides around on, shirtless. And speaking of Horsemen, The End of the World is off the table…which means the heroes and villains–as if the two are distinguishable–are playing for different stakes entirely.

They join the already cast Regina King (American Crime, The Leftovers), Don Johnson (Book Club, Django Unchained), Tim Blake Nelson (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman, The Reason), Adelaide Clemens (Rectify, Parade’s End), Andrew Howard (The Oath, The Brave), Frances Fisher (Masters of Sex), Jacob Ming-Trent (White Famous), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Handmaid’s Tale), Sara Vickers (The Crown), and Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow).

The show will debut at some point in 2019.

Damon Lindelof has revealed that he wanted Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross to compose music for the show. When he spoke to HBO they told him Trent Reznor had already been in touch to see if he could do just that.
