Naomi Watts joins the Game of Thrones prequel

While we still have to wait for the final season of Game of Thrones, things are moving ahead on one of the prequel shows.

The prequel pilot is in development at HBO and was created by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman) George R.R. Martin. Goldman also wrote it based on a story by her and Martin.

Casting has begun with Naomi Watts joining as one of the leads. Things are vague on her character, but it is known she is playing “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

Taking place thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” Goldman’s project chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend–it’s not the story we think we know.

Josh Whitehouse (Poldark, Valley Girl) has also been cast. It’s described as a key role, though not the central male lead.

Goldman will also serve as showrunner. She and Martin will executive produce along with Daniel Zelman, James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray, and “Game of Thrones” executive producer Vince Gerardis. Chris Symes will co-executive produce.

This is one of five Game of Thrones projects in development. The exact nature of the plot of each project is unknown, though Martin has previously made clear that each project is a prequel rather than a spinoff and that none of the current main cast of the series will be involved.
