The Monster Hunter video game franchise is getting a big screen adaptation. Constantin Film is behind the new film, which will be directed by Paul W. S. Anderson (Resident Evil). Milla Jovovich stars alongside Tony Jaa, Diego Boneta, Ron Perlman and T.I. Harris (Ant-Man and the Wasp) have joined the production.

The games are primarily action role-playing games. The player takes the role of a Hunter, slaying or trapping large monsters across various landscapes as part of quests given to them by the locals. Players use loot gained from slaying monsters, gathering resources, and quest rewards to craft improved weapons, armor, and other items that allows them to face more powerful monsters. While initially single-player games, more recent titles have up to four-player cooperative play, with all Hunters working together to take down monsters. Jovovich is playing a character named Artemis. Harris is playing Link, a sniper, while Perlman will play a man named Admiral, the leader of the Hunter’s Crew.

Filming has begun in South Africa and Diego Boneta shared our first look at his character, Sergeant Marshall.

It doesn’t show much but we see the costume and the fact it looks like they’re going for an arid, desert type look. I’ve not played any of the games so not sure how this fits in, but I had thought the armour and weapons were a little more fantastical. If you’ve played the games let me know what you think of this first image. Meagan Good also shared a few images.

In past interviews, Anderson has said that, “the movie starts in our world and then it goes to the Monster Hunter world and then the final act comes back to our world and it’s basically this epic battle in and around Los Angeles International Airport.”
