Filming has wrapped on Days of the Bagnold Summer which marks the directorial debut of actor, writer and comedian Simon Bird, star of the international hit Inbetweeners films. The cast includes BAFTA-winning actress Monica Dolan (Eye in the Sky, The Falling, Pride), Earl Cave (The End of the F***ing World), Rob Brydon (The Trip, A Cock and Bull Story), BIFA-Award-winning actress, writer and director Alice Lowe (Prevenge, Adult Life Skills, Sightseers), Olivier-Award-winner actress Tamsin Greig (Second Best Marigold Hotel, Tamara Drewe) and Elliot Speller-Gillot (Uncle).

A heavy-metal-loving teenager’s holiday plans fall through at the last minute, meaning he must spend the whole summer with the person who annoys him most in the world: his mum. DAYS OF THE BAGNOLD SUMMER is a tender, funny coming-of-age story; an acutely observed portrait of growing pains, friendship and family life.

Belle & Sebastian have just confirmed they will be doing an original soundtrack for the film.

DAYS OF THE BAGNOLD SUMMER is an adaptation of Joff Winterhart’s graphic novel of the same name published by Jonathan Cape, it is the first graphic novel to be nominated for the Costa Book Award. The screenplay is by Lisa Owens, author of the novel Not Working. The film is produced by Matthew James Wilkinson of Stigma Films, whose credits include the thriller Kaleidoscope starring Toby Jones and Double Date directed by Benjamin Barfoot, written by and starring Danny Morgan (named the Screen International/FrightFest Genre Rising Star 2017) and winner of the Golden Octopus Award at the 2017 Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival. DAYS OF THE BAGNOLD SUMMER is co-produced by Isabelle Georgeaux of Pont Neuf Productions, also a co-producer of Calibre starring Jack Lowden and Martin McCann which received its World Premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and producer of Keeping Rosy with Maxine Peake. Wilkinson and Georgeaux previously collaborated as producer and co-producer respectively on The Call-Up. James Appleton from Storyhouse Pictures whose credits include Us Among The Stones with Laurence Fox, serves as executive producer.

Belle & Sebastian are one of the most cherished and celebrated UK acts of recent decades. They have released eleven critically acclaimed albums including the epoch-defining Tigermilk, If You’re Feeling Sinister and The Boy With The Arab Strap and many classic EPs and singles, including most recently the How To Solve Our Human Problems trilogy. Triumphing against the odds to win British Breakthrough Act at the 1999 BRIT awards, being one of the first bands to curate their own festival with the landmark Bowlie Weekender, having their songs strewn across the landscape of popular culture everywhere from High Fidelity to Gilmore Girls and Juno – Belle & Sebastian have defined the spirit of DIY in a career where the only constant has been innovation and individuality. The Boaty Weekender, a first seaborne European music festival and cruise of its kind to be hosted by the band in summer 2019, is the latest adventure from a group whose relationship with its fans has always been defined by community and togetherness, with every show ending in a stage invasion and mass boogie/singalong, and fans adorning many of the band’s iconic album covers.

Best known for playing the sarcastic but lovable geek Will in the hugely popular and successful The Inbetweeners TV series and feature films, Simon Bird has also co-created, co-written and co-starred in Chickens, a series for Big Talk Productions and broadcast on Sky. His first film as a director, the short Ernestine & Kit produced by Stigma Films supported by Creative England via BFI NETWORK, premiered at SXSW in 2016 and gained a Best Short Film nomination at the Irish Film and Television Awards.
