Ansel Elgort joins Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story

The Baby Driver himself, Ansel Elgort, has been cast as Tony in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the Broadway musical West Side Story.

Larry Kert played Tony in the original 1957 musical. Richard Beymer (Twin Peaks) played the character in the 1961 film.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the story is set in the Upper West Side neighbourhood in New York City in the mid 1950s. The musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks, from Puerto Rico, are taunted by the Jets, a white gang. The young protagonist, Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang’s leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.

Tony Kushner wrote the revival of the 1957 musical, which was originally written by Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim with music by Leonard Bernstein.
