The new Joker teaser and set video features Joaquin Phoenix in clown makeup

Todd Phillips (The Hangover) has begun shooting JokerJoaquin Phoenix plays the title role in the origin film and a new promo teaser thing has been released. It starts with a slate saying costume test and then shows Phoenix standing in costume as Arthur Fleck He then smiles and we see flashes of him in clown makeup. It looks slightly similar to the makeup worn by Cesar Romero in the old Batman TV show and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

I am assuming (and hoping) that this is not going to be the actual look of the Joker once he becomes the Clown Prince of Crime. I get the feeling it may have a similar tone to the Christopher Nolan Batman movies.

I also wonder whether, if this film is successful, will DC and Warner Bros. reassess their Cinematic Universe and use this as a new turning point / soft reboot of things?

There was also this new set video released.

What are your thoughts on the look?

We also have our first look at Zazie Beetz as she will appear in the film.

Phillips co-wrote the film with Scott Silver. It will look at “the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

The film takes place in the 1980s and also stars Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker is being produced by Phillips and Bradley Cooper under their Joint Effort banner, and longtime Martin Scorsese producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff. It is executive produced by Richard Baratta, Joseph Garner and Bruce Berman. Phillips is joined by director of photography Lawrence Sher (The Hangover), production designer Mark Friedberg (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), editor Jeff Groth (The Hangover), and Oscar-winning costume designer Mark Bridges (The Artist).

Jared Leto will not appear in this Joker film. He is due back in a Suicide Squad sequel at some point, along with another standalone Joker movie that will be separate from Phoenix’s Joker project.
