This is pretty cool news. A few weeks back Henry Cavill (Mission: Impossible Fallout, Man of Steel) said he would love to play Geralt in The Witcher series that Netflix is developing. Cut to right now and he has been announced in the role.

Based on the best-selling fantasy series, The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

Cavill does love his video games and he certainly has the look to play Geralt. All in all, I am quite happy with that casting.

The video games were based on a series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski.  Netflix is working with Polish production and visual effects studio Platige Image on the show, and original author Sapkowski will serve as a creative consultant. As he had no involvement with the video games from CD Projekt Red it is great to hear he is working on the show.

“Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar,” says Erik Barmack, Netflix’s VP for international series. “We couldn’t be more excited about bringing [it to] Netflix members around the world.”

Sapkowski said, “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and themes that I have spent over 30 years writing. I’m excited about our efforts together as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

Cavill also confirmed the news on Instagram.

Henry Cavill currently stars in the critical and box office hit Mission Impossible – Fallout which has earned over $649 million worldwide. He is a massive fan of Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of fantasy short stories and novels about the witcher Geralt of Rivia. Henry starred in the dual role of ‘Clark Kent / Superman,’ in Man of Steel, the highest-grossing Superman film to date, and in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. He made his feature film debut in The Count of Monte Cristo. His credits include the Golden Globe-nominated series “The Tudors”; Whatever Works; Immortals; Cold Light of Day and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Upcoming he stars in Nomis alongside Sir Ben Kingsley and Stanley Tucci for director David Raymond. Henry co-founded Promethean Productions, along with his brother, Charlie Cavill and Ben Blankenship, to expand Henry’s involvement in all aspects of film, TV, and live events with a charitable component.

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich serves as executive producer and showrunner on the series. Alik Sakharov (House of Cards, Game of Thrones),  Alex Garcia Lopez (Marvel’s Luke Cage, Utopia, Marvel’s Daredevil, Fear The Walking Dead), and Charlotte Brändström (Outlander, Counterpart, Disparue) will all direct episodes.
