First look at Matt Smith as Charles Manson in Charlie Says

We have got a few Charles Manson films and shows heading our way. Damon Herriman (The Square) is playing Manson on both film and TV. The first is Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the other in the new season of Mindhunter.

Tarantino’s film will have Manson and his activities as a backdrop for his story, while Mindhunter’s Manson will be when he is in prison. It is one of those strange dichotomies that we are fascinated and repulsed by people like Charles Manson and films will keep on getting made featuring him.

For Charlie Says, directed by Mary Harron, we see the events leading up to the Sharon Tate murders and the aftermath when a graduate student begins visiting three female followers of Manson.

Former Doctor Who, Matt Smith, plays Manson in Charlie Says and the first image has been released and the film debuted at this years Venice Film Festival.

The film also stars Suki Waterhouse, Hannah Murray, Merritt Wever, Odessa Young, Marianne Rendón, and Chace Crawford.

As Richard Box & Paul Haigh reminded me on the Live for Films Facebook Page, there were a series of animated PSAs here in the UK during the Seventies called Charley Says. They featured a ginger cat telling his human friend not to do dangerous things.

Will this film keep the title here in the UK or will it be changed?
