First look at Virginie Efira in Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta

Paul Verhoeven is currently working on a new film called Benedetta (previously called Blessed Virgin). It stars Virginie Efira as Benedetta Carlini, an abbess in 17th Century Tuscany. The film shot in Italy over the summer and is now in post-production.

A 17th-century nun in Italy suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair.

The film is an adaption of Judith C. Brown’s academic work Immodest Acts: The Life Of A Lesbian Nun In Renaissance Italy. Verhoeven wrote the film with his Elle co-writer David Birke.

Benedetta also stars Charlotte Rampling, Daphné Patakia, Lambert Wilson, Olivier Rabourdin and Louise Chevillotte.
