Pinpoint Film Distribution has announced that Pin Cushion – the award-winning debut feature film from Deborah Haywood – will be releasing in UK cinemas on Friday 13th July.

The powerful feature centres on a close-knit mother and daughter – Lynn (Joanna Scanlan: The Thick Of It, Stardust) and Iona (Lily Newmark: Emerald City, Solo: A Star Wars Story) – who have moved to a new town. When Iona joins the school, and struggles with bullying, Lynn is similarly facing troubles with the not so neighbourly town residents. As both try and deal with their respective issues, they begin relying on repetitive retreats into fantasy and lies.

Partly inspired by her own youth, writer/director DEBORAH HAYWOOD paints a fantastical and poignant picture of two kind outsiders. The film combines the British “kitchen sink drama” aesthetic, known to millions as a strong stable of UK cinema, and a magic-realism that adds a wonderment and vibrancy to the film.

Playing at numerous festivals, the film has had multiple accolades and critical adulation. It began with PIN CUSHION opening the 2017 Venice Film Festival, Critics’ Week, and quickly went onto to win Best Film awards, with a Special Jury Award (New Waves) at the Festival De Sevilla in the Int’l Competition, and an Audience Award at the Créteil International Women’s Film Festival. The film also scored multiple nominations with the Glasgow Film Festival, Cork Film Festival, Madeira Micro Intl Film Festival, Cleveland Intl Film Festival, Evening Standard Awards, and British Independent Film Awards (BIFA’s).

It’s recently been programmed at The Boston Underground Film Festival in Massachusetts, Calgary Underground Film Festival in Alberta, The East End Film Festival in London, along with the Flatpack Festival in Birmingham.

Produced by MAGGIE MONTEITH and GAVIN HUMPHRIES, PIN CUSHION will be screening in UK cinemas from Friday 13th July.
