Donnie Yen, Jet Li and Gong Li join Disney’s live-action Mulan


Donnie Yen has joined the live-action Mulan based on Disney’s animated film. He will play Commander Tung, a mentor and teacher to Mulan, according to Deadline.

A young Chinese maiden disguises herself as a warrior in order to save her father.

Liu Yifei will play Mulan while Niki Caro (Whale Rider, The Zookeeper’s Wife).

The original 1998 animated movie featured the voices of Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer, and BD Wong, while Jackie Chan voiced Chinese dubs of the movie.

Yen previously worked with Disney on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Disney has set a release date for March 27, 2020. Lauren Hynek, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin are writing the script. Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner are producing. Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, and Monster Hunt) will be an executive producer.

Yen recently started work on Ip Man 4.

The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Jet Li (Shaolin Temple, Once Upon a Time in China) is in final talks to play the emperor of China, who orders the mobilization of troops via the conscription of one male from each household.

Gong Li (Red Sorghum, Hannibal Rising) is confirmed as the villain, a powerful witch, which is different from the animated movie.

Also joining the cast is Chinese-Vietnamese actress Xana Tang, who will play Mulan’s sister. The New Zealand-based actress’ credits include local series Filthy Rich and Australian series The Letdown and Dead Lucky.
