"No matter where you go, there you are."

Dwayne Johnson gives some wrestling advice in a clip from Stephen Merchant’s Fighting With My Family

Stephen Merchant (The Office, Logan) is directing comedy-drama about British wrestler Paige. The film is called Fighting with my Family and stars Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth) in the lead role, alongside former WWE star Dwayne Johnson, who also executive produces. Johnson and Merchant worked together on The Tooth Fairy.

Paige, real name Saraya-Jade Bevis Miller, is a two-time Divas Champion and was the inaugural NXT Women’s Champion in WWE’s developmental branch, NXT. She held both championships concurrently, making her the first female to hold two championships at the same time in WWE history.

The film is inspired by the Channel 4 British documentary The Wrestlers: Fighting With My Family and tells the story of reformed gangster and former wrestler Ricky, his wife Julia, daughter Saraya and son Zak who make a living performing in tiny venues across the country. Ricky and Julia want a better life for their children and when brother and sister get the chance to audition for WWE, it seems the family dream is coming true and all their troubles will be solved. However, Saraya and Zak are about to learn that becoming a WWE Superstar demands more than they ever imagined possible as athletes and siblings. Wrestling has always kept this family together – but now it could tear them apart.

The film also stars Jack Lowden, Nick Frost, Lena Headey, and Vince Vaughn. It is due out in September 2018.

Paige was born and raised in Norwich, Norfolk, the daughter of professional wrestlers Ian Bevis and Julia Hamer-Bevis, who once unknowingly wrestled while she was seven months pregnant with Bevis. When she was around 10 or 11 years old, her father started running a wrestling training school every month. She took this opportunity to occasionally enter the wrestling ring, where her brothers taught her about wrestling. She did this until she was 13, when she officially made her debut as a wrestler.

The film is a co-production between WWE Studios and Film4. Merchant is also writing as well as directing; his first since 2010’s Cemetery Junction, on which he collaborated with Gervais.
