Vin Diesel will be Bloodshot in the Valiant Cinematic Universe

Sony is moving forward with its five-film shared universe plan for joint franchises based on the Valiant comic books Harbinger and Bloodshot.

Bloodshot’s protagonist is Angelo Mortalli, a ruthless killer for the mob who is set up by the family and framed for a murder. He instead goes into Witness Protection, but is betrayed by an FBI agent guarding him, kidnapped and forcibly subjected to an experimental program in which his body is injected with microscopic computers called nanites. They erase his brain and rebuild it and his body to be a weapon with superhuman strength and healing powers

The character has already shown up in live action for Valiant’s Ninjak vs The Valiant Universe where he was played by Jason David Frank, but there has been lots of talk about bringing Bloodshot to the big screen.

Jared Leto had been in talks, but it seems that Vin Diesel has closed the deal to play the character according to Deadline. They also report that the film will be in the tone of the classic 1980s tentpoles like Robocop, Terminator and Total Recall.

While I don’t mind a bit of Vin, I don’t really feel he is the best choice for the role. There is actually quite a lot to the character and I’d rather have a non-action movie star take a crack at it.

Dave Wilson, who is Tim Miller’s (Deadpool) partner at Blur Studios, is attached to direct. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival) is writing the screenplay. The plan is for it to be rated R and for it to be released in 2019.

The deal reunites Diesel with his Fast and the Furious producer Neal H. Moritz, who is producing alongside Toby Jaffe and Dinesh Shamdasani. Matthew Vaughn and Dan Mintz are executive producers. Andrea Giannetti will oversee for Sony.

There is huge potential for films based on the Valiant comics, but is Vin Diesel the right choice to lead it? How do you feel about Vin playing Bloodshot?
