Joaquin Phoenix may be The Joker in the new DC origin movie

When we last saw The Joker on the big screen he was being played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad.

As DC and Warner Bros. seem to have everything planned out so well, they then mentioned that they were working on a Joker origin movie to be directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover) and Martin Scorsese will produce it with Phillips.. Out of all the DC comic book characters that really do not need an origin, the Joker is right up there.

While studio negotiations are not yet underway, Phillips has made it clear that Joaquin Phoenix is the top choice to star and sources told Variety that, after thinking it over, Phoenix has agreed to the role. WB had no comment. Phillips had met with Phoenix before the new year and was just waiting for the studio’s go-ahead, sources say.

It is thought that it will be a gritty hard-boiled crime film set in an early-’80s Gotham City meant to evoke the grounded feel of Scorsese’s films like Taxi Driver.

I love comic books and DC have some of my favourite characters. I’ve always enjoyed the Joker in all of his incarnations and never really wanted to know anything more about him. Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke could be the origin story, but then it could something else. That is one of the great things about the character, he is chaos and mystery wrapped up in craziness and a killer smile.

DC and Warner Bros. just seem to be constantly rushing around throwing things together and nothing really sticks. Wonder Woman was probably the best of the recent bunch of films.

This new Joker movie would fall under a yet-to-be-announced new banner of DC Comics, which would give the studio the opportunity to expand the canon of the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles that aren’t included in its current cinematic universe.

If they don’t call it Elseworlds then every single executive at Warner Bros. and DC is an idiot.

For those that don’t know, Elseworlds is DC’s comic book line that tells stories of the characters set in different worlds with no bearing on the main storylines. If they do that, then this could well work and then they could do whatever films they want and it could lead to some amazing movies.

However, it does seem they will make these new films fit into their Justice League cinematic universe, but muddy the waters with different actors playing the same roles…they will also probably try and make the Joker a sympathetic anti-hero with no mention of Batman!

It is still early days, so who knows what will happen.

What are your thoughts on a Joker origin film and how do you feel about Phoenix playing him?
