Disney’s live-action Aladdin film casts Marwan Kenzari as Jafar

Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express, The Mummy) is currently in negotiations to star as Jafar in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin. The character is the grand vizier to the sultan of the Agrabah who wants to use the genie for his own evil plans. He was voiced by Jonathan Freeman in the 1992 animated movie.

He joins Mena Massoud (The 99, Jack Ryan) who is playing Aladdin, and Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) who will be Jasmine. Will Smith will play the role of the Genie. Robin Williams did such a wonderful job in the animated film it is going to be a hard act to follow.

Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes) will direct the film from a script by John August (Big Fish). It will keep the musical elements of the 1992 hit and will borrow plot elements from the original animated movie and 1,001 Arabian Nights.

Nasim Pedrad (The Dictator, New Girl, SNL) also joins the film in a role added to the new film – Mara, the handmaiden and friend to Jasmine.
