Jessica Chastain may be playing Empress Lilandra in X-Men: Dark Phoenix

The Dark Phoenix Saga is a classic story in the X-Men comic book series. They really messed it up in X-Men: The Last Stand, but they are trying again for the next one. It seems that they will at least be a bit closer to the original story as Empress Lilandra of the Shi’ar Empire. That is an alien race and in the comics Dark Phoenix flew off into space and destroyed an inhabited planet by making its sun go supernova. She then destroyed a Shi’ar spacecraft and was later abducted by the Shi’ar Empire who planned to put her to death.

It seems the film will be going into space in some way as Jessica Chastain is in talks to play Empress Lilandra. A great choice, but I always saw Angelina Jolie in that particular role. Lilandra will be the villain of the film, but if it does follow the comic book story, she should have good reason for chasing after Jean Grey. It also seems the film will be set in 1991.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will also star Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner).

Veteran screenwriter Simon Kinberg will make his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix, which he’ll also produce with Bryan Singer, Hutch Parker, and Lauren Schuler Donner.

However, the fact they are once again rushing into the story after just reintroducing Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) in X-MEn: Apocalypse is a shame. I would have much rather had another X-Men movie with them going up against other villains, honing their powers and becoming a proper team. In the background we have Jean Grey’s powers growing and something or someone manipulating her until she snaps and becomes Dark Phoenix at the end of the film for one hell of a cliffhanger.

Hell, it would have been a perfect way of crossing it over with the Legion TV show and had the Shadow King manipulating her.

I know I will still go and see it as I do love the comics, but I have always been disappointed with the X-Men films. They’ve never been quite as good as they deserve to be.

What are your thoughts on the cast of Dark Pheonix? Is Chastain the best choice to play Lilandra?
