Some New Mutants news confirms it will be more like a horror movie

Some of the earliest news about the New Mutants film was that it was going to be a “Stephen King meets John Hughes” style horror movie and now director Josh Boone has confirmed that while speaking to EW.

We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no super villains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.

You can’t have a bigger nerd or fan making this. It’s so important to me. I’m not the 12-year-old who decided to write Stephen King a letter and loved Marvel Comics anymore, but I try to hold myself accountable to that kid. Because that kid is what keeps me from becoming a Hollywood whore. I look back and think: Would he think this would be cool? Would he proud of me? Did I fulfil the dream we had when we were kids?

That sounds good to me and will help give the film its own identity compared to the other X-Men movies. Don’t get too excited as they are aiming for a PG-13 rating when the film comes out in 2018. Of course, I have no idea when this will be set in the increasingly convoluted X-Men movie timeline, or whether it will have any links to Legion or The Gifted TV shows.

The plot is rumoured to involve the team battling the classic Demon Bear and that could help explain the horror elements. We also have a possible plot synopsis:

Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.

Those new mutants are reported to be Magik, Wolfsbane, Danielle Moonstar, Sunspot, and Cannonball. Warlock is also rumoured to be in the film, but as he is an alien, from a race of mechanical organisms that survive by infecting living creatures with the “techno-organic” transmode virus, he isn’t technically a mutant.

Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch) will play Magik, a girl who has learned sorcery and uses teleportation discs to travel. She is also the sister of Colossus. Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) will play Wolfsbane, a girl struggling to reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf.

Sources close to the production say that Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) will soon be announced in the role of Sunspot.

Rosario Dawson is in talks to join the film as Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a mutant and mentor to the young superheroes. In the comics, Cecilia has the ability to create an invisible bio-field around herself and was initially reluctant to join the X-Men. Dawson already plays Claire Temple in the Netflix Marvel shows.

What are your thoughts on the New Mutants movie?
