Tom Hardy is going to play Venom!

What the absolute what?! I never saw this one coming, but Tom Hardy is going to be playing Eddie Brock / Venom for Sony’s Marvel series of films. Obviously, this isn’t Hardy’s first comic book movie as he did play Bane in The Dark Knight Rises.

It is due out on 5th October 2018 with production beginning later this year.

The film was first mentioned last year when they said it would not be tied in with the Tom Holland Spider-Man films so not technically a spin-off, although I cannot see how you can have Venom without Spidey so hopefully that has all changed.

Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) will be directing from a script by Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower). Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing with Amy Pascal. Columbia Pictures executives Palak Patel and Eric Fineman will overseeing the movie for the studio.

I wasn’t really that interested in the film, even though I do like the character, but with Hardy being involved I am super intrigued. It could actually work, but what voice will he use?

Venom made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (May 1988). Venom was originally conceived as a supervillain, but has since become more of an antihero. Venom is a Symbiote, a sentient alien, with a gooey, almost liquid-like form. As with real-world symbiotes, it requires a host, usually human, to bond with for its survival. After bonding, the Symbiote endows its enhanced powers upon the host. When the Venom Symbiote bonds with a human, that new dual-life form refers to itself as “Venom”. The Symbiote first appeared in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 (May 1984), in which writer Jim Shooter and artist Mike Zeck depicted the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe transported to another planet called Battleworld by a being called the Beyonder.
