Inspired by the real story of the 1980’s female wrestling league, Glow – set in Los Angeles and showcasing big hair and body slams – will be the fictionalized story of an out of work actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers.

I watched GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling over the weekend. It is a documentary on Netflix that talked about the original show from the Eighties. Something I knew nothing about, but it was absolutely fascinating. All the women involved really loved it and the reunion at the end does get emotional. Especially when Mount Fiji arrives. Hopefully, this new show will get that feeling of belonging to something just right

The TV show stars Alison Brie (Community, Sleeping With Other People), Britney Young, Sydelle Noel, Britt Baron, Jackie Tohn, Kimmy Gatewood, Rebekka Johnson, Kate Nash, Sunita Mani, Betty Gilpin (Nurse Jackie, True Story) and Marc Maron (Almost Famous, WTF).

GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.

Jenji Kohan (Orange is the New Black) and Tara Herrmann (Orange is the New Black) are executive producers, and the series was co-created by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Orange is the New Black), who will serve as showrunners.

GLOW hits Neflix on 23rd June 2017.
