Masters of the Universe gets a release date

A film based on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toys and cartoon has been in development for a long time. The Mattel toy line was launched way back in 1982, then there have been the various animated shows, and the Dolph Lundgren 1987 live-action film.
McG had been attached to direct the film, but EW are reporting this is no longer the case. David Goyer is apparently writing a new draft for the film. The previous screenplay was written by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch.
Plot details are scarce, but it will involve Prince Adam going up against Skeletor on Eternia.
McG spoke about the film with IGN and had this to say about the tone they were going for. As he is no longer involved in the film it remains to be seen whether any of this still applies.
I watch it, and it’s a tremendous pleasure for me to watch. I’m raised on the toys, and I’m down at Mattel all the time. We’re just really focused on getting it right. I want it to be full-bodied entertainment that respects the fan base, and is more emotional than you might imagine, inventive and original. Obviously, we’re all cognizant of what’s going on with Game of Thrones. It’s incredible. We’re cognizant of what’s going on in Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn’s doing a great job. We’re going to try to answer the call and take it higher.
Sony Pictures gave release for this and a couple of other films – Angry Birds 2 out on 20th September 2019 -Masters of the Universe on 18th December 2019 – Untitled animated Spider-Man movie on 14th December 2018.
