"No matter where you go, there you are."

Warner Bros. are in early talks for a new Matrix movie

It seems that Warner Bros. are planning to take us back into The Matrix at some point. The studio is in early development of a reboot to the Wachowskis sci-fi classic (lets not mention the sequels) and Zack Penn (Ready Player One, X-Men: The Last Stand) is in talks to write the script.

According to THR, Warner Bros. is reportedly looking at Michael B. Jordan (Creed) to star, but it is very early days for this.

The original film was released back in 1999. That time has flown, but any new version would have to push the visual effects as the original did.

Is a reboot the way to go? I suppose it could be, as the end of the original trilogy had the whole system rebooting so we could have a new version of The One. Maybe have it as a pseudo-sequel with Neo still knocking about giving Keanu Reeves a chance to be a blind mentor to the new saviour of humanity.

I reckon the best way to do a new Matrix movie is not have it called the Matrix in anyway and don’t have any mention of that kind of thing in the trailers or promotional stuff. They should go full on Cloverfield so you think you are watching a romantic comedy and then suddenly a grizzled Keanu Reeves appears telling the protagonist that they are the One and that Agents are after him. Then go all out action.

They could also have The Matrix be set in another time period. Have it way in the past so the humans stuck in there have no concept of robots, computers or other technology. You could have it as an almost fantasy world with Morpheus, Trinity or whoever as magic users or creatures. Another option would be go full on prequel. Have Michael B. Jordan play a young Morpheus and we see how he escaped The Matrix.

How do you feel about a Matrix reboot? Who would you want to star in it?

UPDATE: It seems it is not going to be a reboot as Zak Penn had this to say about it:

All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT the Matrix. People who know Animatrix and the comics understand. Can’t comment yet except to say that the words ‘reboot’ and ‘remake’ were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news. If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves.
