Tim Minchin will be Friar Tuck in Robin Hood: Origins

Robin Hood: Origins is another crack at the classic tale. Taron Egerton Kingsman, Sing, Eddie The Eagle) is playing Robin, who returns from the Crusades with PTSD and decides to help the downtrodden folk of Nottingham. The war-hardened Crusader and a Moorish commander take the fight to the corrupt English crown. Jamie Foxx is playing Little John and now THR are reporting that Tim Minchin is playing Friar Tuck.

The film also stars Jamie Dornan, Eve Hewson, Ben Mendelsohn and Paul Anderson.

I think Ridley Scott’s 2010 Robin Hood was the last film to tackle the subject. When that was initially reported it was going to have the Sheriff of Nottingham also be Robin Hood and mixed things up quite a bit. I don’t know if that would have worked, but would have been better than the disappointing film we got.

I am not sure whether enough time has passed for another Robin Hood movie, or whether they are shaking things up enough for this new version to work. Egerton is a great actor, so I am interested to see what he does as Robin.

Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders) will direct the film in Budapest this year. It currently has a US release date of 23 March 2018.
