Fede Alvarez may direct The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel

Sony Pictures would like Fede Alvarez to direct The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the sequel to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

This would be a sequel to David Fincher’s 2011 film. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara won’t be returning for this one.

The film is based on the new novel by David Lagercrantz, who took over for the series after the original novel’s author Stieg Larsson died in 2004.

Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source claiming to have information vital to the United States. The source has been in contact with a young female superhacker—a hacker resembling someone Blomkvist knows all too well. The implications are staggering. Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help. She, as usual, has her own agenda. The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it…

Steven Knight wrote the script with Scott Rudin, Amy Pascal, Elizabeth Cantillon, Eli Bush and Yellow Bird’s Ole Søndberg and Søren Stærmose on board to produce. David Beaubaire is overseeing for the studio.

The project has been high-priority for Sony since it acquired the rights to the book in 2015. The film is now fast-tracked to be made next year.

The choice came as Alvarez and Sony Pictures discussed the director’s potential next project for the studio, following the success of Don’t Breathe.
