Willy Wonka is getting a new movie

Warner Bros. have picked up the rights to Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, which means there is a new film in the works. However, you will notice that I didn’t mention the Chocolate Factory. That’s because this new film will be tale of Wonka’s earlier adventures, before he met Charlie.

If you are going to make a Willy Wonka film this is a great way to go about it. The books and the films have touched on the early life of Wonka so it makes sense and would give the film a fresh approach to a well known character.

Of course we will be hard pressed to replace the much missed Gene Wilder who played Wonka in the 1971 film. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton tried to do so, and while that film did show some of Wonka’s earlier adventures, it never quite worked. Maybe their Wonka was a bit too quirky.

I like the sound of the new film and, if it is successful, future films could introduce other familiar characters such as Charlie.

Simon Rich (SNL, Secret Life of Pets) is working on the script. David Heyman (Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts) will produce.

Who would you like to see play the younger Willy Wonka?
