Check out Stephen Merchant’s new look for the third Wolverine film

Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant and Richard E. Grant are all set to star in Logan, the third Wolverine film.

It is going to be rated R so hopefully we will finally get to see Wolverine cut loose in a true berserker rage.

Word on the street is that Stephen Merchant is playing Caliban. We saw that character in X-Men: Apocalypse when he was played by Tómas Lemarquis. Director James Mangold has shared this image of Merchant and it does seem to confirm the Caliban rumour.

At least he has a similar look to Lemarquis appearance of the character. I just hope Merchant plays the character differently instead of his usually cheeky persona that seems to be the norm. A shame Caliban wasn’t one of Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen as he was in the comics.

Mind you, Merchant was also sporting the bald look when he presented a celebrity version of The Crystal Maze here in the UK.

If Merchant is playing Caliban I also hope we get to see some of his powers being used:

Caliban is able to psionically sense the presence of other mutants within a 25 mile radius of himself. He once proved to be able to catch mutants presence far more away that those 25 miles when he detected the powerful Moloid mutant Val-Or’s psychic scream, at the other side of the planet (This mutant was powerful but his powers could only have been sensed by more sensitive people).

Fight or Flight Response: When stressed, Caliban’s adrenaline kicked in, causing him to temporarily manifest two additional powers. These powers subsided when his stress level returned to normal.

  • Superhuman Strength: Caliban’s panic response increased his physical strength
  • Fear Absorption: Caliban was able to absorb the psionic energy in the fear from others and amplify it back into his environment. This effect could quickly turn nearby people into a panicking mob. Caliban occasionally manifested an enlarged, menacing shadow when his fear power was in effect

However, they never do seem to get the X-Men characters and films quite right so I won’t be holding my breath.

It was also thought that Mr. Sinister was going to be the big bad of the film. The Essex Corp teaser at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse seemed to confirm this, but the filmmakers have since denied Mr. Sinister being involved. Although that could just be misdirection from them.

What are your thoughts on Stephen Merchant’s look for the film.

I have also shared some more of the images from the WPONX account. Can you spot any clues in them? Is the guy in the white suit going to be Arcade?
