Guy Ritchie is in talks to direct the live action Aladdin movie for Disney

Disney are all about live-action at the moment. We’ve already had quite a few and Beauty and the Beast is the next one heading our way. Jon Favreau is directing a live action version of The Lion King…although if it is just all CG animals isn’t that just another animated movie?

The latest news has Guy Ritchie in talks to direct a live action version of Aladdin. I hadn’t even thought of a live action version of that. I mean who is going to be able to touch the performance Robin Williams gave as the Genie? I imagine they may go a different way for that and now be as close to the original film as some of the other live action Disney films have gone.

John August wrote the script for the live-action version, which sources say will keep many of the musical elements of the original.

According to THR, part of the non-traditional aspect of the project is the studio’s intent to make it non-linear, a move right out of the Ritchie playbook. He directed Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Revolver, Rock’n’rolla, a couple of Sherlock Holmes, The Man From UNCLE and a King Arthur movie. So a tale about a lone thief who ends up pretending to be someone he isn’t does fit into a Guy Ritchie type of film.

I can see this could work out quite well. All depends what they do with the Genie.

What do you think about a live action Aladdin?
