J.J. Abrams has said there will be news on a Portal movie soon

Back during DICE 2013 Gabe Newell and J.J. Abrams announced that a couple of little games by Valve Half-Life and Portal – were getting movie adaptations.

Since then, like any news on Half-Life 3, it has all been quiet.

During the Westworld premiere, IGN caught up with J.J. Abrams on the red carpet and asked him what was happening with the films. Turns out they are still in development and there is an announcement coming soon.

We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon

We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom…once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.

I would love to see films based on both games as they are brilliant. I just hope they end up doing justice to the games. What would you like to see in the Half-Life and Portal films? What has to be in them to ensure they are faithful to the games?
