Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 has got off to a great start

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 has got off to a great start. The show has been continuously getting better every season and including Ghost Rider in the new one is working so well. Gabriel Luna is owning the role of Robbie Reyes / Ghost Rider and the look and feel is extremely faithful to the comic. I am so glad we are getting to see much of the flaming skull and that he mentioned selling his soul to the devil. You could easily see the character show up in one of the Marvel Netflix shows….if he ever made it to New York city.

Possible minor spoilers ahead.

There has also been quite few Easter Eggs – Mention of Agent Peggy Carter, Sokovia Accords and Captain America’s disappearance which is a great way of tying it into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. I loved how Coulson said “so many Peggy Carter stories left unrecorded”. A nice, yet sad nod to the cancellation of that show.

There are also links with Doctor Strange. The new season seems more predisposed to the supernatural side of the Marvel universe. Not just with Ghost Rider, but actual Ghosts (although they may be something else) with ties to the Darkhold – that is a mystical book in the Marvel Universe that Doctor Strange once used to destroy all vampires. I think it also brought about the Marvel Zombies storyline in the comics. Great hearing and seeing these things that I’ve been reading about for years.

It was also good to see the beginnings of the Life Model Decoys (LMDs) in the first episode.

We also got to see Mac and his patent-pending shotgun axe. Ah, Mac. He continues to be one of my favourite characters.

The second episode also gave us some more info on the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (played extremely well by Jason O’Mara). He is actually a superstrong Inhuman who was brought in as a suggestion by Coulson. He wanted a powered individual to be the head of SHIELD to help bridge the gap between humans and Inhumans. Surprising, but it makes sense. Looks like the Director is Jeffrey Mace, an old Marvel comic book character who went by the name of Patriot. In the comics he was also Captain America for a little while.

This new Mace seems to be pretty cool, but it did seem odd that he shipped out a sick Melinda May with the politicians he had been trying to impress. Looks like there are other things at work here.

All in all, Season 4 is shaping up to be a great one. Check it out when you can.

Have you been watching the news season? What did you think of it? What other comic book easter eggs did you spot?

In the meantime here is a promo for episode 3.

“Uprising” – As Coulson, Mack and Fitz attempt to track down and neutralize a rogue group looking to end Inhuman Registration worldwide, Simmons and Dr. Radcliffe only have hours to save May before she succumbs forever to her mysterious illness, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Tuesday, October 11th on ABC.
