Jared Leto is going to play Andy Warhol in a new biopic

Jared Leto (Suicide Squad, Dallas Buyers Club) is going to play the pop artist Andy Warhol in a new film. Leto is teaming up with Michael De Luca to produce the film, called Warhol, and Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire, The Wolf of Wall Street) is writing the screenplay.

Based on the book, Warhol: The Biography, by Victor Bockris.

Artist, filmmaker, magazine publisher, instigator of Pop Art, Andy Warhol (19281987) used his canvasses of dollar bills, soup cans, and celebrities to subvert distinctions between high and popular culture. His spectacular career encompassed the underground scene as well as the equally deviant worlds of politics, show business, and high society. Warhol is the definitive chronicle of Warhol’s storied life.

Leto seems like a good choice to play the artist who also managed The Velvet Underground for a while. In later years, he was a fixture in New York’s famed Studio 54 nightclub scene and mentored a new generation of artists, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, before dying in 1987.

Of course this also means we get to ponder who will portray the likes of Lou Reed, Basquiat and the other denizens of The Factory.
