"No matter where you go, there you are."

Looks like we may be getting that live action Justice League Dark film after all

Now I am confused.

Let me go back a bit.

Justice League Dark was originally put together by Guillermo del Toro. Back then it was called Dark Universe. I was going to be a live action film that would see the magical side of the DC universe on the big screen – it was set to feature the likes of Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and more.

Time passed and Guillermo had to leave the project. Then it got cancelled, but then reborn as an animated feature. I recently shared a sneak peek at that and was so happy to find out that Matt Ryan was back in the role of John Constantine, even if it was just his voice.

I thought that was all we were going to be getting, but this is what has confused me. It seems that there may still be life in the live action version as Variety are reporting that Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity) is set to direct the Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment adaptation of Dark Universe. It seems that Liman has left the Channing Tatum “Gambit” film which insiders say is a mutual split between the studio and Liman.

Scott Rudin is producing. Michael Gilio is writing the script. Warner Bros. had no comment.

It seems that Warner Bros. may be making unnecessary changes, as they seem to keep doing for all the comic book movies, as the story mentions the characters as being Det. John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. It could be just a mistake from the article, but I could see the studio doing something silly like making Constantine a policeman. I hope I am wrong about that, but then I remember Jimmy Olsen worked for the CIA and was shot dead in Batman v Superman!

I would love to see Matt Ryan play John on the big screen, but as he already featured in Arrow, I doubt they will do that. However, if any character could pop up in the different DC universes I could see Constantine managing it.

The fact that Warner Bros. and DC seem to be rushing to play catch up with Marvel Studios, it makes sense that Justice League Dark should suddenly be back in their sights. Marvel have got Doctor Strange heading our way this year, which will be bringing the magical arts to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ve also got Iron Fist and The Defenders on the horizon, which also deals with the more mystical side of things.

Warner Bros. have already dabbled in magic. The recent Suicide Squad film had a magic based character in the shape of The Enchantress (Cara Delevingne). They started off so well with her (the hand grabbing her as she transformed), but she ended up just standing there, wiggling her hips.

Anyway, it looks like Justice League Dark is going to get a live action version. I am happy about that, but would love to see each of the characters get their own films first. What would you like to see in it? Ron Perlman as Swamp Thing? What’s the betting we get Colin Farrell as Constantine?
