Isabel Huppert (star of The Piano Teacher, I Heart Huckabees and Amour) is making her first appearance on the London stage in 20 years at the Barbican on 9 June, in Phaedra(s).

Internationally-acclaimed Polish director Krzysztof Warlikowski weaves together Sarah Kane’s Phaedra’s Love, JM Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costello and new original material from Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad. The show opened in Paris and will go on to New York later in the year.

The London run is nine nights only and tickets are available here.

In celebration of Phaedra(s), the Ciné Lumière in South Kensington is currently hosting an Isabel Huppert retrospective, which runs 1 May to 12 June and will include twelve of her best-known films.

She first won our hearts by losing hers in Claude Goretta’s 1977 film The Lace-Maker. It was, so to speak, love At First Sight, as in Diane Kurys 1983 nostalgic piece. Since then she has displayed on stage as much as in front of the camera an astonishing range of strong and fierce rebels or lonely-hearts, always challenging parts, never a dull performance. A muse to Claude Chabrol and Michael Haneke, she has inspired some of the finest and most demanding directors from Jean-Luc Godard and Maurice Pialat to Andrzej Wajda and Hong Sang-soo, in an international, multi-awarded and incredibly prolific career.
