Antonio Banderas joins Simon West’s Salty

Antonio Banderas

Antonio Banderas

Antonio Banderas is to star in Simon West’s hotly anticipated action-comedy, Salty (we spoke to Simon about the film back in 2014), which begins principal photography in Chile from June 2016. The award winning Spanish actor, famed for cult classics including The Mask of Zorro, Desperado and Assassins, will play the lead as Turk Henry, an ageing rock star and reformed sex addict married to a supermodel who is abducted by pirates on a holiday in Chile. Described as ‘The Hangover meets Spinal Tap’, the record-breaking film is the largest equity crowdfunded film of all time, breaking new ground by inviting members of the British public to own a stake in the film’s profits. Salty is the first significant Hollywood film to be funded in this way.

Set in Chile, the action-comedy is rich in colour and exotic locations. The story follows the experience of Turk Henry, an ageing rock star and bassist for a recently split mega platinum music band. A reformed sex addict married to a supermodel and rich beyond his wildest dreams, Turk is persuaded to take a holiday by his wife and finds his pampered paunch plopped on the beach in South America. Turk soon discovers that Chile is probably the last place a recovering sex addict should go on vacation. As he struggles with monogamy, his wife is mysteriously abducted by a group of renegade, ship-less pirates trying to raise money to buy a new boat. Having never organised anything more challenging than a club sandwich from room service, Turk embarks on a mission to rescue his wife. With life skills better suited to playing bass, playing the field, and partying he is forced to navigate the back alleys of Santiago, with hilarious escapades in the city’s flesh pots, and take on ruthless bandits in the jungles of the South America.

With Simon West films grossing well over $1 billion at the global box office, buyers have been quick to recognise the film’s broad commercial appeal as a bankable action-comedy hit and pre-sales have now been secured in several major territories including Middle East (Gulf Films), China (HGC) and Eastern Europe (Prorom and Kino Swiat) amongst others.

Director Simon West said, ‘‘Films of this type like The Hangover and Bridesmaids are perfect examples of how popular this genre can be. I am going to shoot Salty in a style that will exude energy, fun and glamour with elaborate and exciting action sequences very much in the vein of my previous films.
