Altitude Film Entertainment and SportsAid announced today that they are joining forces on the theatrical release of RACE, the incredible true story of gold medal champion Jesse Owens’ fight to make Olympic history, in cinemas 3 June. This partnership is designed to help raise funds for SportAid’s Support the Next campaign, which backs young people’s dreams to become Britain’s next generation of Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

To kick-start the partnership, Altitude has released RACE’S first official UK poster which pays tribute to SportsAid’s 40th anniversary and Support the Next. Providing support and resources to help young, talented athletes fulfill their ambitions and achieve their personal best, this relationship will bring awareness to the British public of how essential funding is to help our budding athletes with training costs, travel and competition expenses.

This summer’s sporting calendar will see another big event when Jesse Owens’ inspirational story come to life on the big screen. Directed and produced by Emmy Award®-winner Stephen Hopkins, RACE follows black athlete Jesse Owens’ meteoric rise to become a four-time Olympic gold medalist at the 1936 games in Nazi Germany. RACE stars Stephan James in his breakout role as Jesse Owens, alongside British Academy Award®-winners Jeremy Irons and William Hurt, as well as the magnetic Carice van Houten and Jason Sudeikis in a career-transforming role. RACE was made with the cooperation of the Jesse Owens Foundation and the Owens family and will be released across the UK on June 3rd.

“There are many great sporting stories, but few quite as inspiring and life-affirming as that of Jesse Owens,” said SportsAid’s chief executive Tim Lawler. “In many ways, the athlete journey is actually a life journey – effort, ambition, success, disappointment and resilience all feel familiar – and SportsAid tries to celebrate this journey through the next generation of talented young sports people that we help. To be able to partner with Altitude at such a significant time for the charity, and it being an Olympic and Paralympic year too, is a fantastic opportunity. One iconic moment in history being shared in a way that perhaps might help a new generation onto similarly great things has a nice feel to it.”

The charity’s recently launched Support the Next film highlights the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of a young athlete’s career – the early mornings, the late nights, the sacrifices made to train and compete, each and every day, as they look to reach the top.

Hamish Moseley, Altitude’s Head of Distribution, commented: “We are thrilled to be collaborating with SportsAid on the release of RACE to support this next generation of British athletes who are making a huge commitment to their sport and pushing through obstacles, not dissimilar to what Owens himself experienced. With the Rio Olympics and Paralympics on the horizon, SportsAid’s 40th anniversary, and the 80th anniversary of Owens’ success, it couldn’t be a better time to rally support for and celebrate the future of British sport!”
