"No matter where you go, there you are."

Jonathan Pryce’s The White King is picked up by Fortissimo Films

Based on the internationally acclaimed and award winning book by György Dragomán, THE WHITE KING follows Djata, a precocious 12-year-old boy coming to grips with his father’s internment by the totalitarian state he calls home. Preyed upon by secret police officers and venal dignitaries, Djata and his mother are forced to navigate a world of propaganda, abuse and vicious gangs, making them risk everything to reunite their family.

Hong Kong- and Amsterdam-based Fortissimo Films has picked up rights to the film. They will screen footage and begin sales at Cannes, ahead of an anticipated launch at a major festival later this year.

THE WHITE KING stars a stellar, award winning cast including Tony Award winning Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, Game of Thrones), Emmy Award winning Greta Scacchi (The Player, Flightplan) and Laurence Olivier Award winning Fiona Shaw (Tree of Life, Harry Potter). Agyness Deyn (Electricity, Hail Caesar!), Ólafur Darri Ólaffson (True Detective, Secret Life of Walter Mitty) and Clare-Hope Ashitey (Children of Men, Jimi: All Is By My Side) also star alongside newcomer Lorenzo Allchurch, who plays Djata.

Adapted for screen by British directing duo Alex Helfrecht and Jörg Tittel, THE WHITE KING marks their first feature following a successful career that includes Helfrecht’s critically acclaimed West End adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises (described by The Sunday Telegraph as “intense, raw, compelling and cutting edge”), their award winning short film Battle For Britain, and Tittel’s graphic novelRicky Rouse Has A Gun (one of Boston Globe’s 2014 Books of the Year).

René Richter (180°) is Director of Photography, with production design by Richard Bullock (Frank, X+Y, Fortitude) and costumes by Sharon Long (The Legend of Barney Thomson).

THE WHITE KING is an Oiffy production, in association with Yellow Knife and post-production partnerChimney Group, with Philip Munger and Teun Hilte (Miss Julie, Black Book) producing. The award winning, independent film production company Proton Cinema (White God) is acting as local service producer.
